How can genomics help agriculture?

About the activity

In the Program of Genomics and Biotechnology of the Vegetal Area of the IRTA, we want to understand the inheritance of important characters for the farmer and the consumer as they are the organoleptic quality of the fruit, the maduration, the aroma, the production or the resistance of the plant to the attack of pathogens.
Specifically, we have focused our research on horticultural species, fruit trees, cereals and medicinal plants with a therapeutic interest.
We use genetic and genomic approaches, studying the variability of genomes in populations and in collections of varieties. We develop methods of genetic improvement in different species that we apply to the improvement programs of IRTA and companies in the sector.
